Hear the story of how successful TV producer Lisa Olin decided she’d had enough of the ups and downs of showbiz and, with no baking experience, made the bold move to open Cake Monkey Bakery. Lisa, who loved to treat herself to a tasty sweet every now and then, saw a white space in the market: no one was selling mini-layer cakes. An ad placed on Craig’s List led to the formation of a partnership with a professional pastry chef, and before long the duo was baking and selling out of Lisa’s kitchen. The line quickly expanded to gourmet Yodels and Pop Tarts—among other throwback treats—as well as gluten-free products. Cake Monkey sweets are now sold on-line at Williams-Sonoma as well as at a brick and mortar shop in Los Angeles.
