Creating A Rustic Yet Elegant Tablescape

There is something captivating about a tablescape that’s country in vibe but has touches of urban elegance. Here’s one I love to create. Used throughout the holidays, it is anchored by its bold centerpiece: antlers bought at the downtown LA flower mart (you can also get them online), placed on top of a jute runner. I bought this particular runner last year at Crate & Barrel; the retailer is selling a similar one this year. The rustic elements are complimented by bright celadon greenery and flowering pink berry branches strewn across the al fresco table. Hemmed linen napkins in an eggplant hue and square wooden plates from Williams Sonoma add warmth, color and texture. Magnolia leaves and fresh pomegranates are scattered down the middle of the runner and artfully woven in throughout the antlers. (When I’m done with the table, I pop the magnolia leaves in a vase—they last for weeks like that.) For place cards, I love using fresh fruit. Here mini pears, looped with a name tag from Paper Source, the look together.

No tablescape – indoors our outdoors –  is complete without the ambiance of candlelight. I typically prefer shorter candlesticks and votives as they don’t get in the way of conversing guests. But in this case, I break my rule. The tall vintage candlesticks add a hint of drama—that this holiday table so deserves.
